Yasunari Nakagomi is an established artist who has been active in art world globally in Europe, Asia and North America. He's also passionate about creating international community of artists and to help young artists. Organizing annual international art exhibition at Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the many things he does to make that happen. We were fortunate to be a help at this year's exhibition.
Listening to his success story gets us excited and we hope you will be too. We caught up with him just before his trip to Los Angels where he spends half of the year. |
●Please introduce yourself●
My name is Yasunari Nakagomi, I'm an artist. I've decided to go full-time as an artist since 2001 and planned to go around North America to Europe. But the first stop, Los Angels, got me an unexpected solo exhibition opportunity and I've been going back and forth between Japan and US ever since. I've done solo shows in US, Italy, Thailand, Korea and other countries. I stayed in US with a grant from Japanese government from 2007 to 2008, I still spend 1/3 of the year abroad to focus on my art. Since 2005 I've been organizing international art exchange show between US and Japan for cultural exchange and for artists to mingle with each other internationally. It's expanded beyond US and Japan now and I've been creating opportunities for young artists to go abroad. It's been 10 years since I started this and it's received very well by the community. I also organize charity art shows with artists from US, UK, Thailand and Japan at art galleries. |
●Please tell us about Crosscurrent, the international art exhibition that you organize●
As I said earlier, I was already over 40 when I went abroad, I struggled a lot in new environments but while doing so I was blessed with so many great connections that eventually fed my artistic journey and made changes to my art. That made me think, "even I get this many blessings, if a young artist tried the same thing you never know how great that will feed him/her". In fact going around galleries in US, I encounter great art but other times I think to myself "there's much better artists in Japan". I also learned that many art related people were paying attention to Japan that many artists wanted to do artist in residence in Japan from talking to them. 10 years ago, people traveling to Japan wasn't reported as much as it is today so it was a surprise to me. On one end, there were people who want to go and on the other end, there were people who want to come, this led to the idea of Crosscurrent. Crosscurrent's agenda is to create new opportunities. Those who take a part in this show learn a lot from this experience by talking in different language to promote their art. The experience alone is a great benefit of Crosscurrent. Having a show is not the goal but to create next step for the artists is our goal. Many have made a great next step from Crosscurrent experience, solo and group shows abroad and in Japan, workshop opportunities, grant from Japanese government, working holiday to name a few. The most important thing in sending Japanese artist abroad is to support them. There are things that only us artists can understand about each other. It's very important to form a good friendship with other artists which you cannot get from agents. Some artists say "my art speaks for me", but going into other countries, speaking yourself really matters. I always let artists do their own translation from Japanese to English which is not easy but when they actually go abroad this experience comes back to them as a gift. We had help from Kyoko from implish this time with translation of all the US artists' artist statements and designing the catalog. She also helped greatly with Japanese people understanding US artists by not just translating the language but the culture and art behind it too. She understood and translated all the sensitive expressions that artists tend to use which is not something you can get from other translators. I thought it was very special about implish because it specializes in art. For the artist talk, she interpreted Japanese artists' expressions to things that's comparable in US culture so they can easily understand. I think Japanese artists were able to communicate with US artists confidently because of this. Also I'd like to mention her great attitude, she was good at keeping the artist as the center of attention while interpreting and treated them with great hospitality with us. US artists seemed to be very comfortable with her, and I was very thankful because she didn't only translate but understood our agenda well. Everybody involved was very thankful and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank her again. |
●Tell us about what you've been doing abroad●
I've been mainly in Los Angels since 2002 and other parts of the States. Other than US, I've done solo and group shows, workshops, lectures and studio works, in Korea, Thailand, Laos and Italy. From 2007 to 2008 I was sent to California State University, Bakersfield as a researcher by Japanese Agency of Culture Affairs. I've been going back and forth between Japan and other countries for the past 5 years and I spend about 1/3 of the year abroad and other 2/3 in Tokyo or my studio in Yamanashi. I met with people at NPO gallery LA ARTCORE http://laartcore.org/ when I first started going abroad. The director happened to be second generation Japanese Lydia Takeshita. There I met many international artists who helped me with wonderful opportunities. An artist invited me 4 times to Thailand to their National Art Exhibition as a guest and to host workshops. An Italian art director at cultural institution invited me to have a solo show, workshop, artist in residence in Italy. Everything just happened like that, I was lucky to stumble upon LA ARTCORE who was supportive of artists. They helped me greatly with my career. On the side of my own art, I try to help other artists as much as possible myself by organizing international shows and connecting them with people who could help. |
●What do you think is important going into other countries?●
Even if you go alone, going to other countries means meeting with people there. It's the same as in Japan, trust is important. Communicating with people there and building a good relationship plays an important role. Of course things are different in different countries, for example, Japanese people try to let people read between lines but that doesn't work in other cultures. You need to communicate by talking, explaining and showing. What I learned in the States is that it is a country of merit system. I thought it was a country of individualism which is not untrue but in country as such having good relationships with people really matters, knowing people matters. For example, let's say you wanted to meet the director of an art gallery. They wouldn't speak to you if they don't know you but if there was anyone that you mutually know, they'd come to your studio themselves to see your art works. They trust who they trust trust. But everyone has their own different approach so it doesn't work to just copy how others do. You have to be authentic in the communication; you need to be sensitive, imaginative going your own way. Even we speak different languages, people are people everywhere and kindness and personality are something we all understand regardless of differences. That becomes very apparent in students when I host workshops. Many people have told me in multiple countries that "not everyone can make it as well as you do". In that sense I think I was very lucky. |
Many Japanese artists at some point or another think about moving
abroad to expand their possibilties. Some go into schools or take advantage of working holiday program or artist in residence program. Manami Ishimura, this article's featured artist, got that opportunity purely based on her art works. She's currently working very hard to go into a master's program in Texas next year but spared us sometime to tell us how she got the opportunity and her plans for the future. |
●Please tell us about yourself.●
My name is Manami Ishimura. I'm a scupltor. I graduated from Tama University of Art majoring in sclupture. I always loved drawing and making things so I went into pre-college art school but I wasn't very into controling colors, I didn't like paints. On the other hand, making sculptures by hands felt right so I decided to go major in sclupture. In college, I learned about aboriginal art and I knew then that that's how I wanted to live so I decided to become an artist. |
●Tell us about your art and concept●
I make art when I have these moments when I don't feel like I actually exist even when I have a physical existence here, it kind of scares me but at the same time fascinates me. Often times I realize what my original ideas were after finish making it. It's almost as if making art is a tool for me to discover those ideas for me. I like thinking things philosophically and that's why I was so drawn to aboriginal myth. But not everything can be put into words and art helps me fill in the gap. I feel like art keeps me in touch with the truth of the world. |
●When do you feel the need of English?●
I love other cultures because there's a lot to discover and feed my art too so being in touch with other cultures is important to me. Each of them is beautiful in their own ways but I feel like those aren't shared enough among us in the world. It may be a too big of a dream but I want to connect the beauty by using contemporary art. And Japanese art market is very small in the first place, especially for my kind of art so inevitably I have to go into international market so English plays a very important role in my art career. |
●How was your experience working with implish?●
I had help from implish when I needed to do an artist talk for US-Japan international art exhibition. It's hard enough for me to explain my art in Japanese and just translating Japanese into English wouldn't be enough so implish was a great help. I made a draft English myself and had it proofread to make it more natural. It also helped that they gave me comments on each corrected parts so I could fully understand how it turned out. I had my artist talk translated on the site too and one of the American professors listening to my talk came up to me and told me "I love your concept, it's very articulated" and he decided to give me a full scholorship to their master's course. I'm very thankful for implish because It did not happen if it wasn't for the thorough help I got from implish. |
